Sanctions, Support & Service Leavers. A two-year project, working in partnership with the University of York, to examine the impact of the benefits system on veterans and their families.

A 15-month project investigating domestic violence and abuse (DVA) within military families in the UK by talking to people who currently provide, use, and refer to specialist DVA services, in order to determine what constitutes ‘specialist DVA provision’ for military families, and then sharing these findings with UK Refuges Online who will add services meeting these criteria to their online system specialism to enable workers to better support military families suffering DVA. 3-year’s sole sponsorship of the King’s Centre for Military Health Research’s (KCMHR) annual ‘Veterans’ Mental Health Conference from 2017 to 2019 in an award worth £15,000. KCMHR, part of King’s College London, has hosted successful ‘Veterans’ Mental Health’ one-day conferences since the inaugural conference in 2015, bringing together academics, charities and policy makers with an interest in the field to network and to hear the latest research from speakers of world-class reputation from across leading UK and international institutions.

This work has been commissioned by FiMT to consider how the recommendations made in the 2013 Transition Mapping Study have been implemented, with a particular focus on employment and the transferability of skills and qualifications.

Research carried out by Dr Deidre MacManus into offending behaviour, mental health and the welfare needs of ex-Service personnel entering the criminal justice system.

Research to understand the commercial benefits that ex-Service personnel can bring to a business. The report was published in November 2016.

A 24 hour consultation entitled “Back to Civvy Street: How can we better support individuals to lead more successful civilian lives after a career in the UK Armed Forces?”. Senior participants from the MOD and Government to Military Charity, Employment, and Training sectors, analysed 3 transition-related areas: employment and housing as a route to economic stability; social networks as a form of resilience; and altering public perception that service leavers are damaged individuals. FiMT commissioned an evaluation the Transition Mapping Studies 2013, to understand the extent and manner in which they have influenced and impacted on policy development and service delivery.

Provision of a Transition Liaison for each of the Family Federations for 2 years to help design and implement a transition strategy that will empower and engage families in the transition process.

Sponsoring a 2-year Randomised Control Trial of modular motion-assisted memory desensitisation and reconsolidation (3MDR) for treatment-resistant PTSD (new treatment). The report is due to complete August 2019.
