A 15 month study to explore whether remote access tele-therapy (ie telephone and ‘video-telephone’ services such as Skype) could be used to improve access to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder therapy for UK veterans, and to assess the impact of the treatment.

A research project (in partnership with the Local Government Association) which aims to improve the delivery of local covenant pledges. The 2nd edition ‘Our Community, Our Covenant’ was published in 2017.

This two-year major study looked at the impact of traumatic limb loss on the families of those who have been injured. The research explored the experiences of traumatic limb loss from the perspective of the veteran and their family unit, to provide insight into, and understanding of, their needs and how they experience, manage and adapt to living with limb loss.

The Institute for Employment Research at the University of Warwick, QinetiQ and X-Forces Enterprise were commissioned by Forces in Mind Trust to understand what more could be done to support the Armed Forces Community in pursuing self-employment and thereby help to maximise their chances of a successful and sustainable transition. This research seeks to fill the current gap in knowledge and contribute to policy-making and service delivery.

With this grant DSC will fully research and evaluate the extent of the impact of www.armedforcescharities.org.uk and the associated report Sector Insight: UK Armed Forces Charities.

A grant was awarded to RAND Europe to review the relevant literature available concerning several aspects of the transition process for military families.

A grant towards a Radio programme, and an evaluation of this, for Service and ex-Service personnel living with chronic pain. Three broadcasts were produced and can be accessed via the Pain Concern website.

A grant to help fund an independent evaluation of the RBL’s pilot online mentoring platform. The project trialled an innovative method of delivering networking and guidance to members of the ex-Service community who were actively seeking employment.

An 18-month study into the internal and external barriers to help seeking experienced by ex-Service personnel with mental health problems. The final report completed in Autumn 2017.

Initially awarded as a project in its own right under the MHRP, working alongside its (non-MHRP) sister project, 'Understanding, supporting and serving the NI veterans’ community', these two projects became joined in February 2017 under what is now known as the Northern Ireland Veteran Health and Wellbeing Study (NIVHWS). The mental health (Hidden Veteran) element is now intertwined within the main project, but will have its own specific section within the final NIVHWS report, looking specifically at the Hidden Veteran Community within the sensitive context of Northern Ireland.
