A whole family approach to transition
FiMT publishes a new policy brief on a whole family approach to transition

Whilst we know that most Service leavers and their families make a successful transition to civilian life, some do not. The Understanding the Transition from Military to Civilian Life report from QinetiQ and RAND Europe, highlighted that progress had been made for Armed Forces families, but there was still more to be done to ensure that families can lead successful civilian lives.
Forces in Mind Trust is publishing a series of policy briefs covering four key policy areas from the 2025 report.
A whole family approach to transition
Families play a vital role in operational effectiveness, retention and morale in the Armed Forces. However, during transition they can feel poorly informed and left to navigate a complex support landscape with limited direct access to guidance and services.
This policy brief sets out why transition policy and support must recognise the needs of the whole family, not only the Service leaver. It highlights practical steps to make guidance clearer, improve access to information and reduce complexity across support services. These steps can ensure that families can better engage with transition support improving outcomes for the entire family including the Service person.
Policy Brief
This policy brief outlines how a whole family approach can better support Service leavers and their families to achieve a successful transition to civilian life.
